Holy Holy are hitting the road once more with their A Heroine tour, as Patrick Muller catches up with one half of the duo Tim Carol to talk about their next chapter.
Holy Holy have had a huge year. With the release of their debut album, When The Storms Would Come, they have toured the world, recently being hailed as one of Liam Gallagher’s favourite bands, as the boys met him at their packed-out London gig.
Now singer Tim Carol has received recognition in the form of the APRA PDA songwriting award. “It was a strange night. We were overseas. We found out about an hour before our London headline show. It was a fun, sold-out show, so it was already a good night, but that just really put me in a good mood.”
The band celebrated the award, yet being the hard workers they are, it’s back to work as usual. “When you go on tour, the band goes into massive debt before the tour, then comes out of it once the money starts to come back in from that. All these flights, all these hotels, there’s a lot of outlay. At the moment the award money is just going towards that.”
The band, the brainchild of Carol along with former Dukes of Windsor guitarist Oscar Dawson, is now gearing up for an Australian tour on the back off their new single, A Heroine, a tune that came from an atypical process for the half-Melbourne half-Tasmania-based songwriters.
“The main riff and melody came from Oscar, which is slightly less common of the way we write. We do send things back and forth quite a bit, Oscar has a pretty decent studio in Melbourne where he can do production and arranging, and I have enough where I can do vocal takes and harmonies.”
The track carries a universal message of forbidden love and common mistakes. “I was listening to a Melvyn Bragg podcast where he talked about dynasties rising and falling and kings falling in love with people they shouldn’t, so I was inspired to write a song about how humanity repeats the same stories again and again.”
Excited for the tour, Carol mentions possible future highlights. “I haven’t played The Triffid before and I’m from Brisbane originally,” he laughs. “The Corner in Melbourne is a pretty iconic space. We’ve played there before, but never headlined.”
