In celebration of our third birthday, we invited a bunch of musicians to detail their experiences of the number three. We asked them to pen a story about how Third Time Lucky, the Rule of Threes or Three’s A Crowd has applied at some time in their life, whether it’s personal, musical or anything else!
Now, sit back, grab a drink (or three) and enjoy our series of Third Time Around. You can tweet us your birthday wishes here, or send us a birthday e-card here.
Alexander Laska, guitarist in Melbourne-based rock favourites Kingswood, details how the third time really was the charm – in more ways than one.
And so begins the tale to commemorate three undoubtedly exciting years for life, culture and music publication, Soot Magazine. It is interesting to consider the nature of the number three and why associations have developed, whether good or bad, that correspond to this denomination.
Interestingly, I recently read into some numerological aspects of the number three and discovered that it has associations with a lacking in discipline, and a relationship to the beholder that lends itself to the more chaotic aspects of life. Perhaps there’s something in the idea of serendipity at play that allows three to be easily blamed for lucky streaks (third time lucky) or unfavourable odds (the rule of threes).
None the less, my story unfolds with the eventual union of the band I write for and perform in, Kingswood, and a booking agent by the name of Damian Costin.
Costin now heads up a burgeoning independent Australian booking agency, proving the idea of “the little red-headed angry man that could”. However, this story precedes current day to the beginning of the band’s entry into the touring world, trying to secure what is a seemingly integral part of “your” desire to take on the road and bring “your” music to the people.
The long and short of it is that it took three times to convince said Costin that we were a viable bet and that he should dedicate his life to us, and solely us, if he knew what was good for him.
At the time, he would have thought it a joke, but funny how things pan out, and it eventuated, along with a surge in grey hair and spiraling stress levels. But it’s not all bad, we recognized this dedication and followed him to support his dream of starting his own agency. Only after he asked three times.
